The SET 833a by Amplifon

The fully Commercial and Professional 833a based, Single Ended Amplifier.
A recent creation and offering of Amplifon.

Made in Poland – with Pride.

Ladies and Gentlemen, so this is how a professionally crafted transmitter valve based SET amplifier can look like. It is the professional utilities and technical facilities, with all the proper tools for metal work, locksmithing, et al, that make a hell of “a difference”. Very elegant and professional LOOKS.  A work of art, that you would not hesitate to put on some pedestals in the most dignified and exposed locations within your living room.

It may have come to your attention, that I am recently somewhat fascinated with radio transmitter tubes. Being a DIY person, or a “Non-Commercial” guy, with a professional life “elsewhere”, in a totally different business segment, I am exposed to those natural limitations, being the kitchen table as a workbench, some basic electric and/or hand tools, and limited free time, during which I can dive into my hobby. Not to mention the Lady, complaining about that “junk” on the kitchen table …

So, now you can make a simple comparison, in terms of the “looks”.
This is my “macaroni” DIY version of a similar, transmitter valve based construct:

P1130137 c

Obviously, there *IS* a difference in terms of how they fare and compare in terms of the “Looks”.

I guess that what I wanted to say is that even if you know how to put such a construct “electrically together”, into a working contraption, that does not necessarily mean that it will have the quality “Looks” to go with the quality “Sound”.  Even if you are in the know in terms of vacuum tube circuits, and have some basic (if not downright limited), DIY skills, you may simply be lacking the metal machining and processing infrastructure, professional tools, that are necessary so as to get the desired aesthetic results.

That is the reason why I am so very impressed with this new construct, of Mr. Andrzej, of Amplifon, and frankly speaking, a bit jealous about the looks of his new commercial offering.

And indeed, this is an offering. In terms of sound quality, I can imagine that it has similar clout, sheer slam and absolute sound quality, which I already “know of”, features that may be reasonably expected from such a class of high power transmitter vacuum tubes.

The Lamb within the Beast.
Or is it the Beast within the Lamb ?
A very typical “Mr. Jackyl and Dr. Hyde” type of thing.
You will be simply scared to listen to some of your CD’s.

Probably something similar to what I had a chance to experience very recently on my kitchen table, but unfortunately I would be perplexed, crestfallen, if not outright ashamed, If I were to invite some guests to the house, so as to show it to them.

But not in this case:

What I am saying here is simply the following. If you are not a “DIY soul”, double left-handed, and do not have a small little metal works factory in your cellar or garage, but you do have the financial means to purchase such a ready made “commercial” product, then this offering may be of interest to you and it may be well worth knowing, that such a product exists and is being proudly manufactured in Poland.

From what has been researched, it seems that there are a very few companies that offer such a similar device on the world market. The companies that stand out in direct competition to Amplifon on this one would be such as: Audio Power Labs TNT 833a,  Vawac, TLA 833 Reference, WinAnalog S Series, Audio Music AM-833S, … maybe a few others.

But the thing is … such competitive products are prohibitively expensive, with price tags ranging from 100 000 USD up to even 350 000 USD.

I do not feel comfortable or authorized to talk about the price tag of this recent creation of Amplifon, the more so that it is a very new product. But what I **WILL** stress, with full force, based on information that can be hunted down on some diy audio discussion groups, is that the “target” price tag for these Amplifon devices, will most probably be very **COMPETITIVE**, ranging in fairly low numbers, such that will simply knock your boots off. At least when compared to the competition, as listed above.

The input stage is based on a EC86 triode with a high degree of linearity.

The output triode is driven by a 6C41C.

All voltages are stabilized (anode voltages of the input tubes, the driver tube, the output stage, the filament heaters of the input stage, as well as the heaters of the driver and output stages).

The device is equipped with a soft start mechanism and an autobias. It does not require from the user any whatsoever “regulation” or “trimming” activities during the normal course of usage.

Special security means are built in, so as to detect and accordingly react to too high a current of the output tube, and/or too high a temperature within the device.

The amplifier also signals the end of life condition of the power output tube, where the working current of the output tube is below an acceptable threshold level.

That is what the new Amplifon creation looks like.

In a nutshell.
